Students First

I believe the best way to support our students is by being present where learning happens. That’s why I make it a priority to visit all 19 schools in our district every year. These visits aren’t just symbolic—they’re intentional and focused on building real connections with students and educators.

All students have value. I believe our schools need to be safe and welcoming environments for all students, and that every student should feel like they belong. I recognize that our district has room to grow in this area. Hearing students tell of their experiences of feeling marginalized or ignored at school saddens me, while motivating me to be a better leader for them. I strive to use my influence to help all students, no matter their race, ethnicity, sexuality, gender, or socio-economic status to feel supported and cared for in our schools.

Celebrating the strengths and accomplishments of students is important to me. I am amazed at the diverse talents of our students.

Over time, my consistent presence in our schools has encouraged other board members to increase their own involvement. Additionally, staff are reaching out more often, inviting board members into their classrooms and extending invitations to performances and events.
